Back to School Budget Series – Part 3: 4, 5 & 6
How do you budget for the school year? What do things cost? Some expenses may be familiar and others might be totally new. The main categories are:
- Living (Housing & Food)
- Tuition & Books
- Transportation
- Entertainment
- Other
Within each of these categories is a list of expenses many of which we all pay, some of which are unique to you. The key is to include all of them in your budget. If you’re not sure how much to include, do a little research to ensure your estimate is as realistic as possible.
TIPS:
- Living – Don’t forget to include your share of the utility bills & household products. Check out the local paper or websites to research rental options.
- Tuition & Books – Make a note when installments are due. Can you get used or second hand books?
- Transportation – Did you include trips home, maintenance on a vehicle? Does your school have a transit pass deal?
- Entertainment – Is your estimate realistic? Pack your lunch and brew your coffee at home leaving your $ for a meal out with friends.
- Other – Did you include gifts, personal care, cell phone bill, banking fees, clothes?
